William
Shakespeare (Stratford-upon-Avon April 23, 1564
,— Stratford-upon-Avon, April 23, 1616) was a poet, playwright and
English actor, considered the greatest writer in the English language and the
most influential playwright in the world. It is often called England's national
poet and "Bard of Avon" or simply The Bard. Of his works, including
those in collaboration, remain until today 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long
narrative poems, and a few sparse verses, whose authorship, however, are still
disputed. His plays have been translated to all major modern languages and are
staged more than those of any other playwright. Many of his texts and themes,
especially the theater, remain alive to this day, being revisited frequently,
especially in theater, television, film and literature.
